The Los Angeles City Charter is a partisan issue

Letters to the Editor: L.A. needs city charter reform. Nury Martinez and her colleagues show why L.A. residents should support the most recent version of a charter revision as they prepare next month to vote on a referendum to repeal Prop. 11.

This is not a partisan issue. It should concern everyone.

RICHMOND TIMES TIMES staffer Nury Martinez reviews the charter changes from the two proposals.

The issue of voting rights in Los Angeles is a hot topic in the past few weeks. In my opinion, the debate is not so much over whether black citizens in L.A. should be able to vote in the upcoming elections (although some feel they should).

The issues are more about what can be done to improve the voting process rather than simply the numbers. The Los Angeles City Charter was drafted by the Democrats and enacted by the Republicans.

The Democrats were reluctant to change it in the first place and the Republicans made no changes because L.A. voters approved them. The Democrats were always hesitant to change it because they couldn’t see how one person’s vote was more valuable than another. The Republicans, however, decided they could give a little more power to the people.

But the Democratic voters, who controlled the legislature and governor’s office, chose the path of inaction of not even discussing the issue, and the Democrat voters, who control the L.A. City Council, chose the path of inaction of not even discussing the issue.

If the Democratic voters want to retain power, they will need to vote for the most recent Republican version of the Charter.

I have been a supporter of Prop. 11, a so-called initiative, since the day it passed.

When I saw how the vote went, I was surprised. But at the same time I was filled with anger and frustration. I’m a registered voter and I cast my vote for the mayor that best suited my interests.

I did not vote for the proposition
