Shannon Abloh Is Ready to Talk His New Album
It was only a few weeks ago when we first met up with the designer at the London Hotel Dior. We were talking about his new album and the way in which it would work for a solo artist, and he told us a story about how he ended up deciding to release the album on his own. It was a story we had heard before but this time was personal. The story is a pretty interesting one and one that he’s willing to share with you in the form of an exclusive conversation.

The story goes that he was at a point where he was feeling like his music was not doing anywhere near as well as he had hoped it would. As he explained it to us, the fact that he has written and recorded what he has written and recorded does not have to reflect some kind of failure on him as an artist.
Instead, he decided that he would like to do what he does best but in the context of his own sound. As he explained it, “I think that some people who are not as confident as me maybe need to be able to express themselves in a certain way. And I think I’ve been doing that for a long time, I don’t like to hear people trying to imitate or imitate me and I’m happy to have found a way where I have more control over my sound.
“So from that standpoint I’m really happy that we’ve achieved that and I would like to be able to give back to my audience what they have given me.”
He added, “I think that everyone should be able to sing whatever they want, no matter how weird or how boring it is. The art of being able to express yourself is the art. And I think that that‘s what I’m trying to do. I think I am trying to make stuff that I enjoy making and I enjoy listening to. I’m sure that it’s gonna take time, but I feel like I have the time I need to make this album.”
