Hundreds killed in Nigeria floods, more than 1.4 million displaced
Water has overwhelmed villages in central Nigeria killing thousands, displacing more than one million, many of them in areas hit by flooding.
More than 1 million displaced people in Borno state, the hardest hit by flooding, have been living in flood shelters in camps in the cities of Bori and Gwoza.
People have started to return to the villages but aid agencies fear conditions will get worse as flooding continues.
Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua has ordered an international investigation of the water-borne outbreaks that have killed thousands of people and displaced more than a million.
He said officials will monitor the water levels with the help of the World Bank, US embassy and the British Embassy in Nigeria, AFP reports.
