The 7th edition of The Guardian Quill award for outstanding poetry has been presented to the writer-in-residence at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, by the award committee led by the university’s vice-chancellor, Joanna Bourne. Quill is the world’s largest and wealthiest literary prize for poetry, with a monetary value of $5 million. It was endowed in 2002 by the late poet laureate C.P. Cavafy, the late Scottish literary giant who made his reputation as the “author of the epic” in ancient Greek, and as a poet of the 1960s. He once said, “The poetry of the future must not be a matter of mere phrases or of a personal’style’. Something which is a combination of the two, something true, pure and new.” To date, the prize has been shared by 17 poets, including T. S. Eliot, Amiri Baraka, Michael Ondaatje and Anne Carson.
