(CNN) — Nick Kyrgios has become the latest tennis pro to end a great tournament before its end.

In a stunning climax to his US Open win over Richard Gasquet, Kyrgios was beaten by the No. 6 seed Daniil Medvedev in his final match of the US Open.

The world number two was up a game and four match points against the 19-year-old Russian when he lost, 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in four minutes.

Medvedev, who has beaten the world number one once this year, had been ranked world number four at the start of the year and Kyrgios had been ranked world number five since October.

Gasquet, who won at the US Open last year, had won six of his last eight matches against Kyrgios.

In an upset, the American lost his only other match of the tournament to the 17-year-old Spaniard, who had beaten Gasquet in the last two singles matches of his career.

“I don’t think you can be angry at this moment, because you have just lost the greatest match of your life,” said Kyrgios, who was making his first appearance in an ATP event at the US Open since November 2004.

“I’m just so proud of the way I’ve played on this court. After all the ups and downs, this is one of the best times of my life. I am so proud of the way I played today.

“I’ve had a tough year, but today I think I’ve given everyone something to dream about: The guy who reached number one in singles and won the US Open.”

Medvedev, a 26-year-old who had lost his last 15 times against Kyrgios, needed only 63 minutes to beat him for his only win of the tournament so far.

Gasquet will now play world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals on Monday.

Kyrgios also has a shot at world number one Novak Djokovic if he beats Milos Raonic on Sunday in the final. Djokovic can overtake Federer if he beats Jo-Wilfried
