MacKenzie Scott donates record-breaking $84.5 million to Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit
MACKENZIE SCOTT, who was born with dwarfism and now is known as the “world’s most famous dwarf,” is donating $84.5 million to the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit, the Girl Scouts’ national leadership organization.
The donation will cover the estimated $16 million in Girl Scout programs that will be in jeopardy due to the Girl Scouts of the USA closing in August 2009. The Girl Scouts of the USA, a national nonprofit organization with over 4,000 local councils and 1.4 million adult volunteers in 70 countries, has suspended its operations for good, and all current programs will cease on Aug. 31.
“I want to thank you all for the amazing work you do,” said Scott. “I want to take a moment to say thank you for the girls who have supported our organization, the staff, volunteers and board, and especially the thousands of wonderful girls who have chosen to become a Girl.”
“Girl Scouts works with over 300,000 girls each year and has a big impact on their lives,” said Executive Director Melissa Krasnow. “Today I am thrilled to announce that for the sixth time, Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and metro Detroit have made a record-breaking $84.5 million gift to our organization.
“The donations will help build even bigger, brighter Girl Scout programs that will help girls achieve great heights in life and achieve their highest dreams.”
