Six masked suspects steal jewelry, handbags at gunpoint in Mid-City area

December 30, 2019|KALAMAZOO, MI — A woman’s personal belongings were taken at gunpoint in the 200 block of W. Cushing Street in the Mid-City area on Wednesday, according to Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputies.

A suspect in a black BMW pulled up to a car with the woman in it and a man sitting inside, sheriff’s deputies said.

Authorities said the man in the BMW got out and got a gun from the car.

They said the suspect was dressed in black and was wearing a ski mask, a ski mask over his face and a black bandana over his face.

The suspect approached the woman and demanded an undisclosed amount of cash.

Once the woman handed over cash, the suspect got in the car, took off and drove to a home in the 600 block of N. Main St.

Once in the home, the suspect grabbed the woman again and drove to the 200 block of W Cushing Street.

The woman in the BMW, who was traveling with her teenage daughter, was able to get out of the car and ran home.

The woman called police and gave a description of the suspect, deputies said.

Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to the home on N. Main St. and found the car and the owner, later identified as 20-year-old Kahlil K. Smith.

Deputies arrested Smith on a felony detainer and booked him in the Midland Correctional Facility.

He has a history of mental health issues.
